May 4th, 2009

On Saturday, May 16th Circle of Song will be performing a Spring concert at the Barre Town Hall at 7:00 PM. In its 9th season of performance, Circle of Song is offering a varied selection of choral music.

Our concert this spring is essentially a Capella. Deb Page will be accompanying us on a couple of pieces. Anne Kneeland and Dorrie Stewart-St. Onge will be featured in "Longest Time" by Billy Joel, arr. Audrey Snyder, with accompaniment by Jim Pavao on the bass. Two of our strong sopranos, Minnie Isgro and Carol Erickson will be performing solos also.

Our director Julie Rawson has selected an inspiring collection of music including "Pick-a-Little, Talk-a-Little and Good Night Ladies" by Meredith Wilson from "The Music Man", "Deep River" a Negro Spiritual, arr. Roy Ringwald, "In Remembrance" by Eleanor Daley, and "Amazing Grace" Traditional, arr. Diane White."

The beautiful Welsh hymn "Calon Lan" by Gwyrosydd/John Hughes will be sung in Welsh. The fast paced "Alma Llanera" by Pedro Gutierrez, arr. by Angel Sauce, the 2nd Venezuelan national anthem, will be sung in Spanish. And the Hebrew folk tune "Hiney Mah Tov", arr. Iris Levine will be sung in Hebrew.

During the remainder of the concert Circle of Song will perform several more pieces including two more traditional American hymns, "I Will Bow and Be Simple" a Shaker Hymn, arr. Marlene Montgomery, and "How Can I Keep From Singing" a Quaker Hymn, arr. Edward Tyler. The American Spiritual "My Lord, What a Morning", arr. Kathy Bullock, will also be part of the concert. Two more Welsh pieces included in the concert, but sung in English are "The Blackbird" by Llew Tegid/Cainc Gymreig, arr. Charles Clements, and "The Bells of Rhymney". This lyrics for this piece were written by Idris Davies and Pete Seeger, who just celebrated his 90th birthday, wrote the music.

Refreshments will be served at the close of the concert. This is a free concert and all donations are welcome. Hoping to see you on May 16th at the Barre Town Hall!
