Circle of Song

Circle of Song Holiday Concert, December 11, 2009
Julie Rawson
November 23rd, 2009

On Friday, December 11th Circle of Song will perform a holiday concert at the Barre Town Hall at 7:00 PM. In its 9th season of performance Circle of Song is offering a beautiful selection of choral music this year including the "Hallelujah" chorus by George Frideric Handel. We are pleased to have fourteen young ladies who are chorus members from the Hubbardston Center School accompanying us on this piece. The Resurrection Brass Quartet, including Steve Aliquo, Joe Orszulak, Julie Rawson and Jim Pavao will provide instrumental accompaniment for this arrangement. We are delighted to have Deb Page as our accompanist for this winter holiday concert.

Nancy Afonso, Choral Director of the Hubbardston Center School, will be joining us with fourteen 5th and 6th grade girls from the school chorus. These young ladies include: Hannah Bedard, Haley Taylor, Stephanie Fuller, ReAnnen Hogan, Emma Guertin, Brianna Stevens, Olivia Charland, Jennifer Nardone, Isabelle Rhinhart, Laura Dowd, Hayley Haines, Brittany Murch, Alyssa Conti, and Kasey Wells. These talented chorus members had to audition for this group and are very excited about performing with the Circle of Song. They will also be joining Circle of Song in singing "Ding Dong Merrily on High"; a 16th century French melody with words by G. R. Woodward and arranged by David Willcocks. The Hubbardston Center School girls will be entertaining us on their own with, "The Complete History of Western Music", arranged by Audrey Snyder.

Our accomplished director, Julie Rawson, will be performing a duet with her talented husband, Jack Kittredge in "Summer Nights" by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. This piece is from and musical "Grease" and will have several small solos by Carol Erickson, Jim Pavao, Anne Kneeland, Gale Gagnon, George Aguiar, and Nina Marcinowski. Dorrie St. Onge will also be performing a solo part in "Lida Rose" and "Will I Ever Tell You?" by Meredith Wilson. This barbershop quartet style piece is from the popular musical "The Music Man". Minnie Isgro is performing a solo in the Appalachian carol, "I Wonder as I Wander", arranged by John Rutter.

During the remainder of the concert Circle of Song will sing several more pieces including "My Soul is a River" by Ben Allaway, "Steal Away" by Antonin Dvorak, and "That Lonesome Road" by James Taylor and Don Grolnick. One of the most entertaining pieces coming to you on Friday evening will be a contemporary arrangement of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" by Tchaikovsky/Funk. You'll have visions of fairies dancing above your heads sprinkling bright fairy dust as you listen to this delightful a Capella arrangement. The chorus will also be singing the traditional "Sicut Locutus Est" by Johann Sebastian Bach in Latin.

Refreshments will be served at the close of the concert in the rear of the Town Hall. This is a free concert and all donations are welcome.

Circle of Song invites new members to join. Membership is $30/year ($25 for students). Chorus members range in age from 17 (though younger singers are welcome) to 77 and beginning musicians to professionals in the field.
