Circle of Song

Sing with the Circle of Song
Julie Rawson
January 25th, 2010

Starting February 4 come sing with Circle of Song this winter/spring, and chase away the Winter Blues!

Circle of Song, a community chorus based in Barre, has been singing together since September 2001. We are an inter-generational chorus that has members from High School age to septuagenarians and every age in between. Rehearsals are every Thursday night from 7:00 – 9:00 PM. The first rehearsal will be at the home of Jack Kittredge and Julie Rawson at 411 Sheldon Road, Barre. Rehearsals alternate between Jack and Julie’s house and that of Charlie Miller on Old Hardwick Road in Barre.

We sing in four part harmony. We choose music from all time periods and many parts of the world. Circle of Song sometimes performs with intricate or simple back up bands, percussion and often piano. This season, February - May, will culminate in a concert on Saturday, May 15 at the Barre Town Hall. Though our program is not yet set, we will be choosing from the following: music from Georgia in the Caucasus, South Africa, some gospel/spiritual, the Beatles’ Yesterday with brass quartet, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, Let the Circle Be Unbroken featuring Josh Pearson and a home grown string band, a COS favorite - Great Trees, and other great picks.

After falling in love with the Hubbardston Center School select chorus following our joint venture this past Christmas, we are hoping to share the stage with them this spring again, though details are not firm yet.

Circle of Song members range from very experienced singers to those who cannot read music. Descriptions of the group from our membership include: participatory, lots of fun and laughter, not stuffy, just about music, and a wide variety of it and Julie only makes us sing two different languages per concert. Circle of Song specializes in good intonation and choral blend. Though anyone who wants to can find a solo opportunity, the ensemble music is all about the group effort. Skill building is an important part of the group’s work; it includes solfeg for ear training and harmony improvement, and rhythm exercise for accuracy. Membership is $30/year.
