Circle of Song Spring Concert, May 15, 2010

On Saturday, May 15th Circle of Song will perform a Spring concert at the Barre Town Hall at 7:00 PM. In its 9th season of performance Circle of Song is offering a beautiful selection of choral music this year. We are pleased to have the "Select Singers" from the Hubbardston Center School, Quabbin Community Orchestra, and the Resurrection Brass Quartet joining us for this exciting concert. We are delighted to have Deb as our accompanist for this Spring concert, including Steve Aliquo, Joe Orszulak, Julie Rawson and Jim Pavao will provide instrumental accompaniment for this arrangement.

Nancy Afonso, Choral Director of the Hubbardston Center School, will be joining us with thirteen 5th and 6th grade girls from the school chorus who make up the "Select Singers". These young ladies include: Hannah Bedard, Haley Taylor, Stephanie Fuller, ReAnnen Hogan, Emma Guertin, Brianna Stevens, Olivia Charland, Jennifer Nardone, Isabelle Rhinhart, Laura Dowd, Hayley Haines, Brittany Murch, and Alyssa Conti. These talented chorus members had to audition for this group and are very excited about performing with the Circle of Song. They will be joining Circle of Song in singing "The Alphabet" by W.A. Mozart, arr. by Carl Deis, and "Now I walk in Beauty"; a Navajo Prayer arr. by Gregg Smith. They will also be accompanying the chorus in "Sunrise Sunset" from the musical "Fiddler on the Roof". Several of our chorus members have solos in this piece, Anne Kneeland, Jim Pavao, George Aguiar, and Carol Smith. The "Select Singer" will be entertaining us on their own with, "River Song", an Irish ballad.

The Resurrection Brass, including Steve Aliquo, Joe Orszulak, Julie Rawson and Jim Pavao will provide instrumental accompaniment for "Yesterday" by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. A talented member of our chorus, Joan Bevers, will be performing a solo in this piece. The quartet will also be performing "Indiana" and a George M. Cohan Medley, both arr. by Paul Nagle, and a Folk Suite, arr. by Lyndol Mitchell.

The Quabbin Community Orchestra, directed by Russell Killough-Miller, will be entertaining us with "Wachet Auf", by J.S. Bach, arr. by Russell Killough-Miller, "Hornpipe" from Water Music by Handel, "Prelude in C Minor", by Frederic Chopin and arr. by Russell. They will also be playing "Farandole" by Georges Bizet, arr. by R. Greene, "Theme from Scherezade" by N. Rimsky-Korsakoff, arr. by J. McLeod, and "Anitra's Dance" from the Peer Gynt Suite by Edvard Greig, once again arr. by Russell Killough-Miller. The members of this talented group are: Cynthia Kennison (concertmaster), Nancy Hughes, Philip J. Katz - 1st Violins; Rachel Landry, Marion Lyon, Aria Killough-Miller - 2nd violins; Nancy Afonso, Sharon Coombs - viola; Ralph Hughes, Holly Wielsma - Cello.

Our accomplished director, Julie Rawson, will be performing "Memory" by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Jack Kittredge will be performing a beautiful spiritual, "I Got a Home In-A Dat Rock", arr. by Harry Burleigh. Minnie Isgro is performing a solo in "Agnus Dei" by Georges Bizet. Our chorus member Josh Pearson, soon to be graduating High School, will be performing a solo and playing guitar for "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" by Charles Gabriel. Gail Gagnon will lead the group in "Sincere". This barbershop quartet style piece is from the popular musical "The Music Man" by Meredith Wilson.

During the remainder of the concert, Circle of Song will sing several more pieces including "Banquet Fugue" by John Rutter, "Little Beggarman", a traditional Irish folk tune, arr. by Emily Crocker, and "Great Trees" written by Wendell Berry with music by Mary Alice Amidon. We will be performing "Loch Lomond", a traditional Scottish tune, arr. by David Overton with Nina Marcinowski singing a solo, and finally "Daniel Daniel Servant of the Lord" an African American piece arr. by Undine Moore with solos by Jack Kittredge and Charlie Miller.

Refreshments will be served at the close of the concert in the rear of the Town Hall. This is a free concert and all donations are welcome.

Circle of Song invites new members to join. Membership is $30/year ($25 for students). Chorus members range in age from 17 (though younger singers are welcome) to 77 and beginning musicians to professionals in the field.
