Circle of Song

Circle of Song Holiday Concert, December 17, 2010
December 5th, 2010

On Friday, December 17th Circle of Song will perform a holiday concert at the Barre Town Hall at 7:00 PM. Come celebrate our 10th season of performance with a beautiful selection of choral music including favorite pieces from past performances. We are pleased to have fourteen young people from the Select Singers, of the Hubbardston Center School join us. They will be accompanying Circle of Song on three pieces of music: "Lo, How a Rose e'er blooming", "Praise the Lord", and "Silent Night". The Resurrection Brass Quartet, including Steve Aliquo, Joe Orszulak, Julie Rawson and Jim Pavao will provide instrumental accompaniment. We are delighted to have Deb Page as our accompanist for this winter holiday concert.

Nancy Afonso, Choral Director of the Hubbardston Center School, will be joining us with 5th and 6th grade students from the Select Singers. These young people include: Olivia Charland, Carly Burke, Mielynn Charter, Zacheriah Tancrell, Isabel Pitney, Olivia Amato-Hansen, Nicholas Siciliano, Abigail Keagle, Ahlex Thompson, Charlotte Hobby, Haleigh Kierman, Sarah Gregory, Celia Shampine, and Samantha Hobby. These talented chorus members had to audition for this group and are excited to perform with the Circle of Song. The Select Singers will be entertaining us on their own with "Do You Hear What I Hear?"

Circle of Song will be performing a wide range of choral music for this concert. We are singing two spirituals this year including a rousing rendition of, "Ain'-a That Good News" by William L. Dawson. The second spiritual we are performing is "Keep Your Lamps!" by Andre Thomas, a composer well known for his spiritual music. This piece is based on the parable of the five wise virgins and five foolish virgins from Matthew 25 in the New Testament. Another seldom heard Christmas piece being performed is "This Little Babe" written by Robert Southwell. Robert Southwell was a Jesuit Priest in England during the 16th century who wrote many religious poems. The words to "This Little Babe" are an excerpt from his poem "New Heaven, New War".

During the remainder of the concert the chorus will sing several more pieces including "Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves" by Giuseppe Verdi, written in 1842 for his third opera, "Nabucco". Two pieces in Latin will be performed by the chorus: "Ave Maria" by Franz Biebl and "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Lauridsen. Lastly, we will be singing "Erev Shel Shoshanim" by Josef Hadar, and "The Holly and the Ivy" arr. by H. Walford Davies. The members of the chorus will be singing duets in each of the verses of this traditional Christmas carol.

Refreshments will be served at the close of the concert in the rear of the Town Hall. This is a free concert and all donations are welcome. Please come join us!

Circle of Song invites new members to join. Membership is $30/year ($25 for students). Current chorus members vary in age and experience, from beginning musicians to professionals in the field.
