Circle of Song

Circle of Song Begins New Singing Season
Julie Rawson
September 3rd, 2007

On Thursday September 6th, Circle of Song will begin their new season with a rehearsal at Quabbin Regional High School. Circle of Song has been rehearsing and performing in the Barre area since September of 2001. Julie Rawson, a local musician, is the director. Rehearsals are every Thursday night, from 6:45 - 8:45 pm.

Members range in age from about 12 to about 74 and most, but not all, read music. Some in the group play musical instruments and often these talents are used in the group's performances.

Circle of Song generally has two concert seasons: one beginning in September, with a concert in December; the other beginning in January with concerts in May. This December 15th at the Barre Congregational Church, the group will feature the Franz Schubert Mass in G. Franz Schubert died at a very early age but left an amazing musical legacy. This particular Mass has duration of 25 minutes and features several soprano, tenor, and baritone solos. It also features a string orchestra. Folks interested in the orchestral parts are welcome. This musical work is quite stunning in performance. The vocal parts are quite accessible to amateur singers.

Breaking with tradition of eclecticism, Circle of Song will be performing an entirely sacred concert this season. The five other pieces to be sung are Agnus Dei by Thomas Morley; Hallelujah from "Mount of Olive" by Ludwig van Beethoven; My Lord, What a Mornin', a Negro Spiritual; O Magnum Mysterium by Morten Lauridsen; and Oseh Shalom, a sacred Hebrew song arranged by Nurit Hirsch and Elaine Broad.

Circle of Song is always happy to welcome new members (especially tenors!). Circle of Song member, Stewart King, will be providing rehearsal tapes for all those who are interested. All are welcome regardless of musical experience. Circle of Song has a high level of expectation for musical blend, intonation, and expression. It is truly an ensemble. If you are interested in singing with the group, even if you do not read music, please contact Julie Rawson at 978-355-2853 or Or show up at the first rehearsal on Thursday, September 6th at 6:45 pm in the Quabbin Chorus Room.
